Before I jump right in and start posting about beauty and fashion (because you know I’m DYING to talk about a certain new palette), I thought it would be nice to introduce myself and my blog – and what better way to do that than to play a little game of 20 questions?!
If you follow me on social media, you know I’ve been making a collection of questions that you guys have for me. Well, the time has come for me to answer all your questions, as promised, without holding back. Let’s begin!
1. Where did the name “Kandidly, Kat” come from?
When thinking about what I wanted the blog to be called, I knew I wanted something that represented the essence of honesty and transparency, ideals I wanted to instill in the blog. I want this blog to be a space where I can be completely candid and not hide as these are common misconceptions about the beauty industry in general.
I spelled candidly with a K because I always find myself saying “Kat, with a K” when making my Starbucks orders and it’s become something of second nature to me. The K is there to represent that I will stay true to myself.
2. Is Kat your real name?
It’s short for Katarina but I’ve been exclusively going by Kat since my first year of university.
3. What is your blog going to be about?
I’m planning to focus this blog around beauty and fashion. This includes everything from product reviews, to trend discussions, to OOTD/FOTDs, to general industry news!
4. Why did you choose to focus on these topics?
Story time! I’ve always had a passion for makeup and skincare. I remember getting acne really early in life (before most kids even knew what a pimple was!) and being super insecure about it. I was very young when I first started using cosmetics and, thanks to my mom, I was using the entire Clinique skincare line religiously before the sixth grade! Being strict with my skincare regimen from a young age certainly improved my skin but, unfortunately, the acne was persistent and I became very self-conscious. I started to use makeup as a way of covering up my biggest insecurities and, for a long time, it was my security blanket.
I think I only truly fell in love with makeup when I began to view it in a different light: as a way for people to see me rather than my acne. More and more, I started using makeup to enhance my features rather than to hide my insecurities.
My biggest regret is that it took me so long to realize this. I decided that it was time I started blogging to inspire young people to love themselves. Makeup gets a bad rep for being used to cover imperfections but it can also be a great stepping stone to confidence and self-love when we realize we don’t need it to be beautiful but can use it to express ourselves and allow others to see us for who we are rather than what we look like!
Whether we like it or not, our appearance is how we communicate with the world around us without saying a single word; so, let’s have fun and use it to express ourselves as we wish to be seen!
5. Why did you decide to start blogging?
Great question! It came to me when I was thinking about how I could impact the world now that I’ve finished university. I decided I wanted to find a way to empower young adults to be confident and go after their passions in life and realized I felt most powerful when I could express how I felt inside with the outside world.
I then got to thinking about how much I already talk to my family and friends about the latest product or trend I’ve tried, and decided it was time I started sharing these rants and raves with people who can actually benefit from it! Blogging just seemed to be a natural fit for this.
6. What inspires you?
I see inspiration in everything – the world itself is pretty inspiring – but when I’m feeling uncreative and lost, it can always be fixed by visiting another country – or even just another part of town. It’s easy to find yourself in a slump when you’re constantly following the same routine and seeing the same scenery. I find that the best inspiration comes from changing up your location every once in a while to help you see a different angle to life.
7. What is something you wish you were talented at?
I really wish I was talented at drawing! To be able to draw is such a powerful thing. I envy those who can transfer the imagery of their imagination onto paper, creating something real and tactile out of pure imagination.
8. What was your favourite fairytale growing up?
I always loved Beauty and the Beast. The importance of inner beauty is a great message!
9. What app do you use most?
I definitely use Instagram the most. I love that it’s a visual platform so it’s easy to digest and it’s a fantastic tool for engaging with other people no matter where they are in the world.
10. Do you speak any other languages and how well?
My mother tongue is actually Serbian; I didn’t speak English until I started kindergarten! I also learned some French in high school and I can read it decently enough but don’t speak it very well. Right now, I’m also trying to learn Mandarin but I must admit it’s not going great – I’ve hardly mastered numbers – but I’m determined!
11. How many countries have you visited?
I’ve been to 23 countries – I actually wasn’t sure so I made a list!
Listed in alphabetical order within the subgroups:
- United States
- Antigua and Barbuda
- British Virgin Islands (British overseas territory)
- Caribbean Netherlands
- Dominican Republic
- Puerto Rico
- Santa Lucia
- US Virgin Islands (insular area of the US)
- United Kingdom
12. What other countries would you like to visit?
There are so many countries I would love to visit! I would love to explore Asia, Africa, and Australia, as well as more of Europe. I think my next stop will be somewhere in Scandinavia as that’s always been a dream of mine. Please leave some travel ideas for me in the comments – I’m having major wanderlust just thinking of all the places in the world I’ve yet to see!
13. If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be?
I would be a sloth! Imagine being able to lounge around all day, basking in the warm sunshine. Sounds pretty great to me! I also just think they’re such funny animals and I love watching YouTube videos about them. Anyone else a sloth fan?
14. What is your idea of the perfect date?
I think my perfect date would have to involve some kind of surprise because I love (good) surprises, and a walk on the beach, as cliché as that is. I’m not the super romantic type so my perfect date would be pretty casual and would involve lots of laughs and bad jokes.
15. If you could give your younger self any advice what would it be?
Your doubts are the only thing standing in your way! Growing up, I had a tendency to doubt myself and my abilities. Looking back, all that self-doubt was the only thing stopping me from doing everything I’ve ever dreamt of! I’m still working on turning dreaming into doing but I wish I had started that much sooner!
16. What does a day in the life of Kat look like?
Wellllll, not too exciting to be honest, haha.
I start the day off by hitting the snooze button a few million times. I’m not a morning person so when I finally do manage to wake up, I spend a while lying in bed catching up on social media and replying to texts. Eventually, I’ll get my butt out of bed and make myself some coffee. My friends think I’m crazy but every morning, I pour cold milk into my coffee and drink it little by little throughout the day.
Each day is a little different but I’ll usually start by editing some photos, creating graphics, or writing captions for social media. If I have content ready to be scheduled, I’ll do that in the morning as well.
Now, I’m a little bit insane when it comes to research and organization. I have an excel document dedicated to hashtag research, which started out as Helene In Between’s hashtag library (go download it, it’s great!). It has now grown into a monster that I update regularly to include up-to-date links, numbers, and notes for thousands of hashtags in various categories (don’t judge me). Actually, I’ll probably share this document with you guys because it’s helped me SO much with planning out my social media hashtag strategy!
Since this blog is so brand spankin’ new, afternoons are now dedicated to writing and editing blog posts and planning out future content. When my inspiration starts to dwindle, I’ll usually go on social media and get some engagement going with people I follow and maybe check out some new accounts. Sometimes I’ll go back to content creation if I get a sudden burst of inspiration, sometimes I’ll edit/re-edit what I already have.
In the evenings, I like to hang out and do a lot of nothing. My boyfriend designated photographer will sometimes help me take some photos for the week but we usually like to get that done on the weekends if we can.
Yup, that’s about it. I then go to bed and count sheep for a few hours before I finally fall asleep. It’s lit.
17. What is your skincare routine?
Mild hydrating cleanser, hydrating toner, light moisturizer, light eye cream (if my under eye circles are being extra, I use an eye cream with caffeine a bit of sheen).
Oil cleanser, mild hydrating cleanser, hydrating toner, thicker moisturizing cream, heavier eye cream IF my eye area is feeling dry (if I use this when I don’t need it, I get those annoying red bumps). When my skin is dehydrated, I like to mix an oil into my moisturizer to boost hydration.
I’m super strict when it comes to my skincare routine because my skin likes to act up. Despite this, I love to try new products as long as they don’t contain ingredients I know I’m sensitive to (yes, I have an excel doc for this too). I finished taking Accutane a few months ago so my skin is still making a transition from Sahara-dry to combination but I’m finding myself going back to a lot of products I’ve been faithful to in the past.
I’ll be making a whole post about my skincare routine soon so be sure to check that out!
18. What is your favourite product in your makeup collection and why?
It’s got to be the Tarte Shape Tape concealer. Really hate to give into the hype but, in this case, it is more than justified. I’m so picky with my concealer because I’ve always had really dark circles under my eyes plus deep-set eyes that cause extra shadows and crease my concealer! I love that Shape Tape is so full coverage AND it doesn’t crease. I use it on my eyes and on other imperfections; even post-acne hyperpigmentation that usually takes a ton of concealer to cover is easily tackled with a tiny dot of this stuff. It’s seriously been a lifesaver!
19. How would you describe your fashion sense?
My fashion sense can be described as pretty classic and I love to mix and match masculine and feminine pieces! Solid neutrals and blues are my comfort zone but I love to play with prints and try out fun trends. Comfort is also a big decider for me. If I buy something I’m not super comfortable in, I know I won’t wear it more than once (if ever)!
20. Who is your best friend and what personality traits make them your best friend?
My best friend is my boyfriend, Cody – it’s so cliché but it’s true. As for what makes him my best friend, it’s got to be the way we always have something to talk about and I never have to be serious or proper around him. I can completely relax and be myself without worrying that he’ll get offended or weirded out by something I say or do. We also generally like the same things – we both have an unhealthy obsession with dogs – but even if he doesn’t enjoy doing something that I do, he’ll do it with me anyways. He even lets me drag him to Sephora and allows me swatch every colour of every product on his arm without ever complaining! I guess the personality trait I’m trying to describe here is, in one word, easygoing.
Phew! That ended up being a LOT longer than I thought it would be! I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit about me and my blog.
